Biomimetic dentistry is a relatively new philosophy with respect to dentistry and one we offer to our patients. Biomimetics relies on bonding biocompatible materials to your tooth, once the decayed or broken area is addressed.
Traditional crowns and metal fillings rely on very specific retention geometry when preparing your tooth. In order to ensure the fillings and crowns stay on, significant tooth structure must be removed and often additional stress is placed on the remaining tooth structure.
Biomimetic dentistry, on the other hand, relies on bonding and often substantial tooth structure can otherwise be conserved. Conserving tooth structure often results in less post-procedure sensitivity, often decreases the incidence of post-procedure root canals, and ensures that many years down the road, adequate tooth structure is still present in the event that the restoration needs to be replaced.
